|The Yangtze River Bridge of Wuhan is the first bridge over the Yantze River, the longest river in China.|
After People's Republic is founded, the Yangtze River Bridge of Wuhan is one of the constructions of the first five-year campaign. The ministry of railroad established department of Wuhan Bridge in April 1953. On 1/15 1954, with the support from prime minister Zhou En-Lai, the 203rd committee of politics passed "the Decision of Constructing the Yangtze River Bridge of Wuhan", and approved the initial design and budget. On 9/25, the construction finally took place. Although the budget and resource were limited, Chinese and Soviet engineers still overcame all the difficulties. On 9/25 1957, the bridge was completed one year earlier than planned; and the bridge opened on 10/15. The upper level is for cars and has a width of 22.5 meters; the lower level is railroad and has a width of 18 meter. The length of the bridge is 1670 meter (1 mile). With the new bridge, the Three Town of Wuhan (Wuchan, Hankou and Hanyang) were no longer divided by the water. And a passenger can take a train from Beijing to Guangzhou without transferring from train to ship, then back to train.
